What is the architect doing in the jungle? How can architects and natural scientists immerge into a fruitful dialogue to generate new insights for cross-disciplinary innovation? The book contributes to the current discussion of arts-based research taking the example of the interdisciplinary research project BiornaMetics – architecture defined By natural Patterns. Biornametics is an emerging contemporary design practice that explores a new methodology to interconnect scientific evidence with creative design in the field of architecture. The word biornametics is generated from “ornament”, referring to the famous Austrian architect adolf loos, and “biomimetics”. it is concerned with the detection of the principles behind processes of emerging and dissolving patterns in animate and inanimate nature. reflections on the architectural direction of Biornametics, issues of arts and science collaboration, and the application of the methodology show a diverse world of thoughts and approaches to the theme.

Siegfried Mazagg (1902–1932) war ein Tiroler Architekt, Zeichner und Karikaturist, dessen Œuvre es noch zu entdecken gilt. Zu den Hauptwerken des Zeitgenossen von Clemens Holzmeister und Lois Welzenbacher zählen Tourismusbauten, die er in Bezug auf die Durchdringung von alpiner Landschaft und Architektur richtungweisend gestaltete. Für manche dieser Projekte entwickelte er auch umfassende Inneneinrichtungskonzepte, die vom Mobiliar bis zur Beleuchtung reichten. Mazagg orientierte sich am österreichischen Heimatschutz und den neu aufkommenden Strömungen der 1920er-Jahre. Im Unterschied zu anderen Architekten in der Region war er vor allem über die Entwicklungen am Bauhaus gut informiert. Leider konnte Mazagg seine Anfänge als talentierter „Interpret der frühen Moderne“ nicht zu einem reifen Werk ausformen.

Making physical models of complex geometric shapes and their multiple structural connections is a major challenge in the age of advanced digital technology and parametric design in architecture. This approach requires new modeling strategies, technology and methods which are covered in this book. Complex geometric forms generated using virtual media can be tested and validated only by means of physical models, which also make it possible to assess their practical application. The complexity of contemporary architectural design requires the mastery of new methods of producing scale models, which opens a new chapter in the field of modeling, and is the focus of this book. Along with the traditional methods that provide the basis for modeling, this book presents the principles of digital NURBS modeling, parametric modeling, digital modeling support, and model creation, complete with a number of tutorials, practical advice and examples found in architectural practice today.

The Power of Design” provides a compact introduction to the current eleven UNESCO Cities of Design. Each individual city is briefly portrayed with important statistical information and detailed facts relating to its development of design. The highly varied approaches of the individual cities in their use of design as an engine for current and future development are then described in more detail through concrete and well illustrated examples. In addition there are interviews with designers, activists, organizers and critical observers, which the author completed either during his travels or intensive correspondence. The result is a richly illustrated and handy book which combines so-called hard facts with personal impressions and subjective points of view.

GAM.09 trägt den Titel: „Walls: Spatial Sequences“ und beschäftigt sich mit dem architektonischen Element der Wand unter dem Gesichtspunkt ihrer gegenwärtigen technologischen Erneuerung. In jüngster Zeit wird die herkömmliche Funktion von Wänden durch innovative architektonische Entwürfe sowohl konstruktiv als auch in ihrer Bedeutung erweitert. Dabei stehen nicht länger der trennende Aspekt von räumlichen Begrenzungsmauern sondern vielmehr die verbindenden Schichtungen von Wänden in einem ökologischen, städtebaulichen und soziokulturellen Sinne im Vordergrund. Die Beiträge in GAM.09 geben spannende Einblicke, wie Wände in Hinsicht auf ihre architektonischen, technologischen und kulturellen Möglichkeiten neu gedacht werden können. Indem sie die Eigenschaften, Fähigkeiten und Konstruktionsweisen von Wänden neu verhandeln, kennzeichnen sie ein klassisches Thema der Architektur als innovatives Feld des Entwurfs und der Analyse. GAM.09 is dedicated to the stratification of walls in architecture. The interest lies in the ways in which walls may be newly conceptualized. Very recent times have seen a multitude of designs, experiments, and developments that have expanded the conventional function of walls. One could propose that the traditional separation of external form and inner function be complemented by another perspective, one that articulates the wall function of lending support, securing, and retaining, together with qualities of an associative exchange between inside and outside. GAM introduces architectural designs that combine the invention of new techniques with the testing of their implementation. Walls and their functionality as an innovative field of design and analysis.

This volume collects about 20 contributions on the topic of robotic construction methods. It is a proceedings volume of the robarch2012 symposium and workshop, which will take place in December 2012 in Vienna. Contributions will explore the current status quo in industry, science and practitioners. The symposium will be held as a biennial event. This book is to be the first of the series, comprising the current status of robotics in architecture, art and design.

The main emphasis is on the application of geometry in different fields such as engineering, biology, art history and music. Printed Physics, the first volume, begins with the discussion of developments in information technology that make the physical behavior of matter technologically programmable, allow for its factual construction, industrial production and its determination with symbols. Is it possible that a revitalization of the field of physics looms in the future similar to that which took place with geometry in the 19th century?

Bernd Pastuschka setzt sich mit den gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen Architektenberufs sowie den Grundbegriffen des Marketings und der Öffentlichkeitsarbeitet auseinander. In diesem Buch wird fundiert erklärt, welche Anwendungsmöglichkeiten und -bedingungen Architekten und Planer vorfinden. Dabei kommen Pro und Contras einer Presse- und Marketingabteilung ebenso zur Sprache wie der professionelle Umgang mit den Medien und ihren Repräsentanten.

Der „Flughafen Wien“ wurde seit 1954 als ziviler Flughafen ausgebaut und betrieben. Die Passagierzahlen stiegen von 2006 bis 2011 von knapp 17 bis über 21 Millionen. Um die Sicherheit dieser wachsenden Zahl von Passagieren und die Logistik für den Frachtverkehr auf den neuesten Stand zu bringen, hat man sich zu einem strukturell tiefgreifend Umbau entschlossen. 2005 wurde der neue Tower eröffnet (Zechner & Zechner), sowie das Terminal 1A (IttenBrechbühl / Baumschlager Eberle / Eichinger oder Knechtl). Weitere Bauteile folgten und schließlich wurde 2012 der spektakuläre Check-in 3, vormals Skylink (IttenBrechbühl / Baumschlager Eberle), fertiggestellt. Der Architekt, Künstler und Fotograf Roman Bönsch hat die Metamorphose eines der größten Bauprojekte Europas von Anfang an mit seiner Kamera begleitet. Seine Fotos werden nun erstmals in Buchform veröffentlicht, zusammen mit Fotos von Robert Gruber und Larry R. Williams. Ein Essay von Ralph Knickmeier und Texte von Romana Hasler, Sebastian Illichmann, Robert Keiser, Peter Kleemann, Peter Mayerhofer, Thomas D. Trummer und Norbert Steiner runden den Bildband ab.
