GAM.09 trägt den Titel: „Walls: Spatial Sequences“ und beschäftigt sich mit dem architektonischen Element der Wand unter dem Gesichtspunkt ihrer gegenwärtigen technologischen Erneuerung. In jüngster Zeit wird die herkömmliche Funktion von Wänden durch innovative architektonische Entwürfe sowohl konstruktiv als auch in ihrer Bedeutung erweitert. Dabei stehen nicht länger der trennende Aspekt von räumlichen Begrenzungsmauern sondern vielmehr die verbindenden Schichtungen von Wänden in einem ökologischen, städtebaulichen und soziokulturellen Sinne im Vordergrund. Die Beiträge in GAM.09 geben spannende Einblicke, wie Wände in Hinsicht auf ihre architektonischen, technologischen und kulturellen Möglichkeiten neu gedacht werden können. Indem sie die Eigenschaften, Fähigkeiten und Konstruktionsweisen von Wänden neu verhandeln, kennzeichnen sie ein klassisches Thema der Architektur als innovatives Feld des Entwurfs und der Analyse. GAM.09 is dedicated to the stratification of walls in architecture. The interest lies in the ways in which walls may be newly conceptualized. Very recent times have seen a multitude of designs, experiments, and developments that have expanded the conventional function of walls. One could propose that the traditional separation of external form and inner function be complemented by another perspective, one that articulates the wall function of lending support, securing, and retaining, together with qualities of an associative exchange between inside and outside. GAM introduces architectural designs that combine the invention of new techniques with the testing of their implementation. Walls and their functionality as an innovative field of design and analysis.

The humanities, natural  and technical sciences seemingly have little to say to each other – despite all the trans-disciplinary efforts. The “Applied Virtuality” series will comprise four volumes that create and examine a discourse on the correlations between the larger contexts of ther present. Printed Physics, the first volume, begins with the discussion of developments in information technology that make the physical behavior of matter technologically programmable, allow for its factual construction, industrial production and its determination with symbols. Is it possible that a revitalization of the field of physics looms in the future similar to that which took place with geometry in the 19th century?

Vladimir Tatlin’s (1885–1953) world famous monument design for the III International dating back to 1919 is considered an icon of Russian constructivism. All the demands made of revolutionary design as employed by Soviet cultural propaganda were taken to an extreme in this Utopian design. Tatlin’s monument was designed to be 400 meters tall, making it one hundred meters taller than the Eiffel Tower. It stood for the belief in a new architecture with its playful ignorance of constructive logic.But could Tatlin’s monument be built today, could it have been built in 1920? Students at the Institute of Architecture of the Vienna University of Applied Arts carefully explored the constructive circumstances before they finally subjected the monument itself to a close examination. Model photos taken in 1920 were three dimensionally reconstructed with the help of the University’s geometry department. The answers to the key questions won’t be revealed here, but: they were found and are shown in the book in an engaging and exciting manner.

Design for a democratic society was a matter of urgency in bombed-out postwar Europe. Swiss sociologist, journalist, professor and founding father of strollology Lucius Burckhardt (1925–2003) pioneered the interdisciplinary analysis of man-made environments, and thereby highlighted both the visible and invisible aspects of our cities and social relations. Acutely aware of how our interventions and decisions shape the world, and how the changing world in turn, shapes us, his life-long focus was not only the prerequisites of architecture, urban planning and design but also their long-term impact. Teaching and practice still owe much to his work. Thus, the first selection of Lucius Burckhardt’s texts to appear in English, introduces his groundbreaking theory of environmental design, in retrospective tribute to a prescient thinker.

Techniken werden, zumindest seit Platon und Aristoteles, als eine Art Erweiterung des Menschen diskutiert. Seit damals entwickelt sich, grob gefasst, der Diskurs um die Frage: Sind diese Erweiterungen natürlich und gut oder degenerativ und gefährlich? Oliver Schürer geht in seinem Buch der Entwicklung technischer Innovationen im Bereich der Architektur des 20. Jahrhunderts anhand konkreter Ikonen des technischen Fortschritts nach. Schürer beginnt bei Le Corbusier und Pierre Chareau und dem Maschinenkult der Moderne und zieht seine Beobachtungen beispielsweise bis zu Cederic Prices, Ken Yeangs und Werner Sobeks weltbekannte Projekte. Automation ist ein Schlüsselwort für moderne Planung. Automation im Bereich der energetischen Versorgung unserer Häuser ist schon jetzt nicht mehr wegzudenken. Es lohnt daher unter diesem Vorzeichen einen Blick zurück zu machen, um auch architekturhistorische und architekturtheoretische Erkenntnisse für unsere Zukunft zu gewinnen.

The primary topic of the book is the relationship between the human body and the architectural and urban spaces constructed for it. Identities flow between one subject and another as warmth in a heat exchanger. Is there anything similarly valid for architecture? Is it possible for architectural rules of buildings to be assigned to the inhabitants? Can inhabitants absorb the functionality buildings? Then, isn‘t the construction site the inhabitant rather than the building? Considering this, how will our stock of “building components” then develop? „hands have no tears to flow…“ is a collection of commentaries, pictures and excerpts, quotations and „constructs“ conceived around the human body. The book contains material by Ray und Charles Eames, Bernard Rudofsky, Friedrich Kiesler and other contributors. The design firm „grafisches Büro“ is responsible for the bibliophilic design.

Remix Theory: The Aesthetics of Sampling is an analysis of Remix in art, music, and new media. Navas argues that Remix, as a form of discourse, affects culture in ways that go beyond the basic recombination of material. His investigation locates the roots of Remix in early forms of mechanical reproduction, in seven stages, beginning in the nineteenth century with the development of the photo camera and the phonograph, leading to contemporary remix culture. This book places particular emphasis on the rise of Remix in music during the 1970s and ‘80s in relation to art and media at the beginning of the twenty-first Century. Navas argues that Remix is a type of binder, a cultural glue—a virus—that informs and supports contemporary culture.

Stadtforscher, Stadtplaner und Dekan einer Fakultät für Architektur und Raumplanung: Klaus Semsroth hat die Disziplin des Städtebaus weit über die Grenzen Österreichs hinaus geprägt. Die Festschrift dokumentiert das reiche Netz an Beziehungen, das ihn mit Freunden und aktiven und ehemaligen Kolleginnen und Kollegen an der Technischen Universität Wien verbindet. Die Beiträge reichen von der Architekturtheorie und -geschichte bis hin zu praktischen Fragen und zur Lehre von Stadtplanung und Architektur. Sie beziehen Position zum Fach und zu einer Person, der mehrere Generationen von Städtebauern nachhaltige Impulse verdanken. Ein inspirierender und reich bebilderter Reader mit hochkarätigen Beiträgen u.a. von Sonja Hnilica, Kunibert Wachten, u.v.m.

Die Kybernetik kann als der letzte epochale Wunsch nach einer konzeptionellen Einheit des Technischen in Kunst, Wissenschaft, Technologie, Natur und Gesellschaft gedeutet werden. Aus architektonischer Sicht kann die Kybernetik als eine Faszinationsgeschichte des Technischen erzählt werden. Sie handelt von Faszination, Mythologisierung, Ideologisierung und dem utopischen Potenzial des technischen Denkens in der Architektur. Der Autor hat neben einer umfangreichen Basisrecherche auch bisher unveröffentlichtes Material u.a. in den Archiven von Konrad Wachsmann, Sigfried Gideon, Walter Gropius (einzige Rede von Gropius zum Computer!) und Heinz von Foerster gesichtet.Die Bearbeitung dieses Materials ermöglicht dem Leser die augenblickliche Debatte um informationstechnologische Einflüsse auf die Architektur zu kontextualisieren und zu bereichern.

Since the beginning of time mankind has dealt with nature as a role model, goal and challenge in its model of perfection. Nature is in many different ways a pool for the productive human being, but also a counterpoint to his/her own work. Both the energetic and constructively optimised forms as well as the adaptability and variety serve as role models. Natural scientists, engineers, architects and artists draw from the rich inspirational pool of nature, they learn from and are inspired by nature. The book is an outline of the history of the human examination of nature and presents a perspective for further possible lessons from nature.
