This volume collects about 20 contributions on the topic of robotic construction methods. It is a proceedings volume of the robarch2012 symposium and workshop, which will take place in December 2012 in Vienna. Contributions will explore the current status quo in industry, science and practitioners. The symposium will be held as a biennial event. This book is to be the first of the series, comprising the current status of robotics in architecture, art and design.

Anfang der 1980-er Jahre erwachte ein neues Interesse am umweltfreundlichen Baustoff Lehm, der seine beispielhafte Nachhaltigkeit schon über Jahrhunderte bewiesen hatte. Gerade der Leichtlehmbau, bei dem Holzskelett- oder Fachwerkwände mit Lehm und Faserstoffen wärmedämmend ausgefacht werden, hat besonders gute bauphysikalische Eigenschaften und raumklimatische Qualitäten. Dass Lehmbau heute nichts Exotisches mehr an sich hat, ist unter anderem den vielen Vorauflagen dieses Standardwerks zu verdanken. Die 7. Auflage wurde überarbeitet und erweitert. Viele praktische Tipps, konstruktive Vereinfachungen und der Einsatz von Lehm-Fertigbaustoffen für eine zeitgemäße Bauabwicklung werden anschaulich dargestellt. Neue internationale Projektbeispiele zeigen die Vielfältigkeit des Baustoffes. Selbstbauprojekte sollen anregen, die einzigartigen Möglichkeiten dieses Baustoffes mit den eigenen Händen zu entdecken. Das Buch richtet sich an Bauherren, Architekten und Ingenieure, Hersteller und Handwerker sowie an Selbstbauer.

The manual provides a unique overview of the most important issues that need to be dealt within the first 5 years of an architecture practice. The book was conceived as a combination of three already published wonderland magazines (in an updated form) and two additional chapters of unpublished material. Aside from providing a unique source of reference for architects interested in developing their practices, the manual also addresses institutions and organizations, which deal with the profession (architecture schools, professional organizations, policy makers) throughout Europe. The manual consists of five main chapters: Getting started, Making mistakes, Going public, Getting specialized and Making competitions. The content of the fourth chapter (Getting specialized) will be entirely new material, while the last chapter (Making competitions) will refer to the homonymous exhibition and symposium that took place in Vienna in June 2009. An indispensable book for all who want their young practices to survive.

The purpose of investigating the overlaps between architecture and biology is neither to draw borders or make further distinctions nor to declare architecture alive, but to clarify what is currently happening in the blurred fields, and to investigate the emerging discipline of „biomimetics in architecture [Architekturbionik]. An overview of the present state of research in the relatively young scientific field of biomimetics shows the potential of the approach. The new discipline aims at innovation by making use of the subtle systems and solutions in nature having evolved within millions of years. Approaches that have been taken to transfer nature’s principles to architecture have provided successful developments. How does the architectural design become reality? After a successful presentation come the phase of tenders and that of their realization. Design must now be reformulated into working drawings. That’s exactly what Liebing, a renowned expert for plan views and detailed views, calls „the other architecture”. Working drawings constitute the basis for the real construction itself. In the firms, mostly young architects are charged with these tasks. But during education, this topic is often addressed insufficiently. Both volumes have been gathered into one single volume and unified in terms on content, which permits the consideration of facades and roofs as envelopes. This is of particular interest as to design and its creative freedom.Using current examples of renowned architects, Andrew Watts presents the constructive and material related details. This presentation is based on an easy-to-understand text, photos, and standardized detail drawings as well 3D representations of the components. By means of this information, the partly complex structure of modern envelopes can easily be understood and used as know-how for one’s own needs.The final part of this book deals with the topic “Future“ focusing on digitally controlled construction parts and upcoming application solutions for material und technology.

The Roofs Handbook is a textbook for practitioners of architecture, as well as for structural and environmental engineers who wish to broaden their study. The six chapters examine roofs from the standpoint of the primary material used in their construction, from metal, glass, and concrete to timber, plastics and fabrics. Each set of three double page spreads explains a specific form of construction which is accompanied by drawn and annotated details. Throughout the book, built examples by high profile designers are used to illustrate specific principles. As it is the case in the Modern Construction Handbook the techniques described can be applied internationally.
