Mechudzu is a book which represents questions, not answers. The work of Bryan Cantley, and his firm, Form:uLA, based in Los Angeles, is intended to be confounding – a practice that is a theory, a theory of practice, practice as theory. Cantley’s work is part of the permanent collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Other exhibits of note include a featured exhibition at the Form Zero Bookstore / Gallery in Los Angeles and solo exhibitions “Enantiomorph Inversion Factor” at the Architecture Gallery at Cal Poly Pomona and “Wool and H2O” at the UCLA School of Architecture. This book documents Cantley’s work, lavishly illustrated and combined with congenial essays by acknowledged experts as there are Aaron Betsky, Dora Epstein Jones, Ruth Keffer, Wes Jones + Doug Jackson and Neil Spiller.

When cars emerged in the last century, people began connecting their cities through roadways. In the course of time, a narrow grid of roads originated. But what permits great mobility is, in the urban context, a barrier to urban relations and movement flows beyond the use of cars. The urban potential lying in these residual spaces is explored by the experimental design studio of professor Lafranchi at Burgdorf University for Applied Sciences, Switzerland. Documented in this book, the project of a research center and a world of experience “Fascination of automobile and traffic” by Lukas Ingold and Fabio Tammaro is based, in its constructive design, on concepts of automotive engineering as well as the parameters of the loop-shaped dynamics of a highway hub with its streets, ramps, bridges, and residual surfaces.

Margot Krasojevic – architect and psychologist – is no longer an unknown quantity on the experimental architecture scene, although she is considered a member of the younger generation. Her lectures at well-known schools and centers such as the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, the University of Washington, the University of Australia or Beijing, to name only a few, and contributions to international publications have attracted great interest in her conceptual an visual work. Krasojevic’s central interest is in the relationship between space and body, the question of the degree to which body and psyche adjust to existing typologies and vice versa. The book designed by Büro Destruct is an image/text collage that comprises Krasojevic’s work over the last 10 years. It is meant for architects and students with an interest in experimental architecture and all those interested in spectacular digital visualizations.

Subject of the book is an architectural encounter with the psyche, the starting point being an intervention in a solitary confinement cell of a psychiatric clinic in 1997. Crumbling edges, shifting perceptions, a world of confinement and liberated space, … a network of thoughts and illusions, … sequences” describes the development of architectonic structures in an in-between world of unstable equilibrium. Architecture, art, psychiatry, psychology and philosophy are all linked by perception. By means of pictures, drawings and (thought) models, the different layers are exposed. The book has no beginning and no end, it offers an insight into various sequences involved in the design process.
